Runes may be used as divination tools in which messages and guidance can be shared with the diviner by the energies and spirits that exist amongst us. By making our desires and curiosities known and then placing the runes randomly into locations predefined with their own unique purpose and meaning, we may divine answers to our questions.
Often times there are spirits or energies around us with knowledge and guidance to share. Unfortunately, they are most times unable to speak to us in a direct and audible manner. Thankfully there are many tools at our disposal, such as the Elder Futhark Runes, that we may offer to them so that they may share their message with us in a way that is easier for to interpret.
A session will always begin with a conversation about the intent and desires of the reading. This can be nearly anything the subject desires, from open ended questions such as “what guidance is available to me”, to more directed questions such as “How do I handle “X” problem at work” or “What can I do to mend my relationship with “X”. Additionally, if a subject feels like a spirit or energy has been affecting them, a reading may be done to attempt to open a direct dialog with the spirit or energy. (A more detailed list of ideas for possible reading intentions will be posted in a separate blog.)
Once an intention is decided upon, the Practitioner will choose a preexisting rune pattern or in some cases create a custom one. This rune pattern will consist of specific placements for a rune to be set, each numbers and labeled with their own unique meanings, acting as a “lens” or modifier to read the rune thru.

Once the setup is complete, the practitioner will preform a cleansing of the space, expelling anything which would bring confusion or misdirection into the reading. Most often, this cleansing will also be used to expel from the space anything which carries ill will towards to practitioner or the subject while inviting everything with pure intentions. In certain cases where the purpose of the reading is to understand the purpose or desires of negative forces assailing the subject, this step will be skipped and instead a sigil of protection will be placed within the divining space.
Most practitioners will then open the door to divination using a pendulum, offering a series of questions into the aether which may be answered with yes, no, or unknown. This can set tone of communication and reveal rather or not any energies or spirits are present whom wish to communicate, as well as seek their blessings upon the reading.
Upon completion of the pendulum read, the Practitioner will begin to draw runes randomly from within their rune bag, placing them in the predefined order onto the designed rune pattern. Once all runes are placed, the Practitioner will take a moment to read and interpret the message of the runes. Meditating with them to gleam any intuitive insights they may offer.
Finally, the Practitioner will offer a detailed and full account of the meaning of each rune and how that meaning may be interpreted thru the lens of its placement in the rune pattern. Then, an overarching message will be divined and shared with the subject that is the cumulation of all the insights gained throughout the process, framed in such a way that their posed question may be answered.
This final read, along with a list of the drawn runes and their placements, will then be shared with the subject and, if desired, filed securely with the practitioner. These readings can be very insightful for any future reads the Practitioner preforms for the subject, allowing for open ended and ongoing streams of dialog, expanded answered to more detailed questions, and deeper understanding of the themes at play in the subjects life.
Final Notes.
It is best to keep in mind that divination is a very personal and unique practice, with every Practitioner having their own personal quirks and practices. Much of the practice can be tuned and altered to better suit the practitioner, subject, or intentions. Always feel free to ask any questions or put forth any request you may have at any point during your reading. Most practitioners will be happy to accommodate you to create the most comfortable and effective environment possible.
It is also important to note that divination is not meant to be used in place of any professional legal, medical, financial, psychological, or otherwise specifically licensed form of assistance and guidance. Divination is, simply, a means for a person to gain insight and guidance from beyond the material plane of existence. It is the responsibility of the subject receiving the reading to use the information gained in a way that they believe themselves to be the most suitable for their given circumstance.
